MP artist carves Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi portrait on paneer

Artist Praful Jain was seen carving Gangubai's face on the surface of a paneer block with a sharp paper-knife in a now-viral Reel video uploaded on Instagram.

Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia Bhatt's newest film, has not only been a box office hit, but it has also won over viewers. Bhatt's appearance in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film has also sparked debate, and one artist has paid homage to it by carving her face on a piece of paneer.

While food art is nothing new on the internet, an artist from Ashta, Madhya Pradesh is making headlines after etching out the actor's face with the characteristic red bindi seen in the film, with her head covered by a saree's pallu.

Sharing the process in a now-viral Reel video posted on Instagram, artist Praful Jain was seen carving out Gangubai’s face on the surface of a paneer slab with a sharp paper-knife. Then using the same technique as coffee-stain art, Jain used soy sauce to reveal the portrait.

"This style of art is incredibly tough, but I like doing it, especially jab ghar me paneer babne wala hota hai(when paneer is going to be prepared at home," he said in the description. He further stated that the meal was not thrown away because the paneer was devoured afterwards.

The 21-year-old artist told indianexpress.com, "I cooked paneer pakoda with the same afterwards," adding that the image took around an hour and a half to complete. "I keep the whole thing so clean that I could eat it afterwards," he continued.

When asked how the idea of utilising paneer for paintings occurred to him, Jain explained that it was more of a serendipity that sparked the series. Previously, he used the same process to create a paneer picture of Vicky Kaushal as Sardar Udham Singh.

"I was eating paneer one day when I saw a slit in the middle and realised I could make art with it," he explained. "I'm always looking for new methods to express myself via art."
